SuccessWhale is Terrifying

On 29th August, I released my PHP/JavaScript Twitter client, SuccessWhale. I would like to take this opportunity to say HOLY FUCK.

2009 Usage Summary for onlydreaming.net

Monthly bandwidth limits are things I’ve always ignored, assuming they only become important when one’s website is popular – which mine, assuredly, is not. But having seen that graph, I’ve just checked what my current hosting service provides and I’m really bloody close to it. I think SuccessWhale is about to start costing me money.

  • looking at that graph, that's 1.5gb/month, right?

do you want more hosting? my bandwidth is now officially:
    “Total Bandwidth Provided: unlimited GB”

I can give you full control over a sub-domain (e.g. successwhale.sparktank.net) to host bits/all of it.

  • Yeah, that's about 1.5GB, though I have no idea if that exponential curve will keep going at that rate. A share of your unlimited bandwidth would be fantastically awesome, if you're okay with that!

I'm quite tempted to buy a proper domain for that – is there any way your hosting company would let me buy a domain but point it at a subdomain of your hosting, or shall I just buy one independently and set it to forward to the sparktank.net URL?

  • yes – dreamhost allows external domains to be pointed at their hosting (that is how aefaradien.co.uk works). You just need the hoster of the domain to allow you to change the DNS/nameserver config.

i will send you a mail with hosting details.

and given how much i use successwhale, its only right that i contribute towards it ^^

  • You sir are a god. I've stuck SuccessWhale up on sparktank, so you can happily use it from there if you like. 1GB is a liiitle bit overkill for space, I'm currently using 108KB! =P

Domain's bought, there'll be the obligatory x hour wait for it to become live, then a 24-72 hour wait for the nameserver change to kick in.

  • well you say 1gb is over kill… aparently my disc space is also unlimited now ^^

  • Unlimited disk space, bandwidth and SSH? How much do you *pay* for this hosting?

  • $8.95 per month. i know that seems a lot, but compaired to say, how much i spend in pubs, and for what i get for it, i am happy with it.

  • Fair enough! Mine's only about £15 a year, so I guess you get what you pay for.

  • Whack it on Sourceforge?

  • I'm not sure they actually allow you to run webapps there. Could be worth investigating though!
