About Me

Hi! I’m Ian Renton: net-junkie, code-monkey, gamer and all-round geek.

I’m a software engineer and programmer from Bournemouth, England. I have a BSc in Physics from Southampton University, and now write software, as well as occasionally dabbling in electronics and network administration, in the defence industry.

On the software side, I specialise in user interfaces and control systems. What I aim to produce in users of my software is joy — if you’re delighted at how easy to use a complex system is, my job is well done. I mostly design interfaces for various military technologies such as autonomous and remote-controlled vehicles, comms and reconnaissance buoys.

I tend to think of writing software as my base state — it is a happy coincidence that people seem to want to pay me to do it. When I’m not in front of a computer screen, I like to read and to write fiction, study martial arts, sail, firestaff & poi. I have pretty much the full set of geek activities too: I fix computers, play videogames, read comics, roleplay and LRP.
